CHADRON - The Chadron Record Newspaper has named longtime community volunteer Betty Staal as its 2018 Citizen of the Year. Staal had been chosen last summer as the Grand Marshal of the Fur Trade Days Parade.
Betty Staal moved to Chadron as a child with her barber father and restaurant worker mother, eventually graduating from Chadron High School.
She married Raymond "Bud" Staal, who served in WWII and worked for the Chicago and NorthWestern Railroad. The couple had two children, Diana and Dennis, with Betty combining her duties as a mother with working at a Chadron motel and at the Office of Human Development.
In choosing Staal as Citizen of the Year, the newspaper cited her volunteer work, willing positive attitude, and infectious smile.
She has been part of the local RSVP program for 25 years, logging more than 5,000 volunteer hours with jobs that include delivering Meals on Wheels and manning the Chadron Senior Center Rummage Room on Fridays and Saturdays.
Betty may be best known for her work with veterans and the American Legion as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, but she's also a charter member of the Chadron Garden Club and has been a member of First Baptist Church in Chadron since 1960
