(SD)-3-Vehicle New Year's Crash Kills One Near Wall
WALL, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Highway Patrol says one person was killed and 3 other injured in a 3-vehicle accident New Year's Day afternoon on Interstate 90 near Wall. Names have not been released.
The Highway Patrol says the roadway was covered by snow and ice, which contributed to the accident about 3:45 roughly 4-miles west of Wall.
It occurred when the 19-year old male driver of a westbound older model car lost control and slid while trying to pass an SUV driven by a 37-year old and the 2 vehicles collided. A compact car driven by a 24-year old woman, then hit the first car.
The 19-year old passenger in the first car was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of that car and the driver and male passenger in the SUV were all taken to Regional Hospital in Rapid City with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the 2nd car, who was alone, was not hurt.
The Patrol says charges are pending against the driver of the first car and that the survivors were all wearing seat belts. The investigation is continuing into whether the woman who died was wearing hers.
