(Neb)-Distillers Grain Spill Creates A Mess On Gering Street
GERING - A malfunctioning gate on the rear of a farm truck headed to Lyman left a mess on a Gering city street Friday. Gering Fire Chief Nathan Flowers told KNEB radio an estimated 2 tons of wet distillers grain or corn mash spilled into the westbound lane of "M" Street over a multi-block area.
Chief Flowers told the station the street was closed for a little more than 2 hours as fire crews used water and foam to help break up the mass of grain, which is very viscous to start with and becomes "really thick, really hard to clean up" as it dries.
Flowers also said it can't just be pushed off to the side either because it could leech back into the road or attract deer to create another type of safety hazard. As a result, Gering street crews and sweeping equipment picked up the grain after firefighters broke it up.
