(SD)-Sunday Crash East Of Oelrichs Claims Life
OELRICHS, S.D. - The South Dakota Highway Patrol says one person was killed and two others injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon east of Oelrichs on Highway 18 that closed the highway for about 2 hours. Names are not being released pending notification of family.
The Highway Patrol says an older model sedan was westbround when it crossed the center line into oncoming traffic about 2:11 pm.
As the 72-year old female driver tried to move back into the westbound lane, it collided head-on with an eastbound late model pickup whose 69-year old male driver had gone into the westbound lane in an attempt to avoid the sedan.
The female driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup driver and his 72-year old female passenger, who were both wearing seat belts, were taken by ambulance to the Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs.
He was treated for minor injuries and released, but she was diagnosed with life-threatening injuries and was later moved to Rapid City Regional Hospital. The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
