(SD)-Victim In Rapid City Garage Fire ID'ed As Homeless Man
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The Rapid City Police Department says the victim in a Rapid City garage fire early Monday morning was a homeless man, 46-year old Ivan Hollowhorn, while the burned man found outside the garage was his nephew Cameron Poor Bear.
An autopsy showed Hollowhorn died of smoke inhalation. Poor Bear was taken to the hospital for treatment of burns
A release from the department says investigators found that Hollowhorn frequently used the garage to get out of the weather and sometimes would start small fires inside to keep warm, but believe this fire was accidental.
Assistant Police Chief Don Hedrick says "Any incident involving the loss of life is a tragedy for our community (and that) Mr Hollowhorn is representative of Rapid City's extremely vulnerable homeless population." Hedrick also says police and dozens of other local service agencies "work tirelessly" to ensure the homeless population can always find safe shelter.
