(Neb)-Shop Local On Small Business Saturday Listen
CHADRON - This Saturday is the 9th annual Small Business Saturday. Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday was the brainchild of American Express, which is expanding it to Puerto Rico this year.
Aimed at encouraging consumers to get out and shop "small" to support local retailers and restaurants, it now also pushes buying from small businesses online .
American Express and the National Federation of Independent Business say nearly $13-billion dollars was spent on Small Business Saturday last year and 60% of consumers surveyed nationwide are aware of the day and 80% of those familiar with it plan to shop at independent retailers today.
Data from CNBC and SurveyMonkey's Small Business Saturday poll isn't quite as rosy but still shows that the event is getting better known. 44% of the consumer's questioned said they will patronize a small business today, up slightly from last year.
Small businesses make up 97% of all Nebraska businesses and employ half the state's private-sector workforce, according to the Small Business Administration, while a consulting firm says that for every $100 spent at local small businesses, $68 returns to the community.
The Nebraska District Office of the SBA is encouraging shoppers share their Small Business Saturday experience by tweeting pictures, stories, and favorite locations to it by using @SBA_Nebraska - and tag the small business, too.
The Chadron Chamber of Commerce joined the Shop Small movement a couple years ago, and executive director Gabby Michna says they've added a little help this year - an elf on the shelf.
Michna says one way the Chamber's been using Chadwick is in a Where's Chadwick?" promotion featuring a number of local businesses. The Chamber has been following Chadwick's exploits on its Facebook page, which is also acting as "clue central" for those searching for the elusive Chamber Elf.
Michna says Chadwick will also take part in the KCSR/KBPY Parade of Lights on December 6th, but will be hiding as usual.
