(Neb)-ICE Serves Warrants In Illegal Immigrant Worker Scheme
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Federal officials say 14 people were arrested in Nebraska and Michigan on Wednesday for fraud and money laundering in connection with a scheme to knowingly hire and exploit immigrant laborers in the U.S. illegally. There are 3 other individuals being sought on warrants.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's investigative arm, Homeland Security Investigations, also arrested over 130 workers as agents served search warrants at agricultural businesses in the two states.
Search warrants were also issued for documents at 4 businesses in O'Neill - Elkhorn River Farms, hydroponic tomato grower O'Neill Ventures, La Herradura restaurant, and grocery store El Mercadito,
Searches were also conducted in Stromsburg, Bartlett, Royal and the Ainsworth production facility of pork producer Christensen Farms - which also saw searches at its corporate headquarters and a truck wash - both in Minnesota
Christensen Farms spokeswoman Amber Portner says the company is cooperating with agents and that she knows of no arrests at any of the company's locations.
