(Neb)-CSC Stadium Still On Schedule Listen
CHADRON - Friends and family coming to Chadron State College for graduation ceremonies who hadn't been on campus for at least a few months were probably surprised to see the progress being made on the new football grandstands at Elliott Field/Don Beebe Stadium.
The 9-decade old concrete bleachers and 20-year old press box were demolished immediately after football season in November and college project manager Blair Brennan says the project remains on schedule for use in the Eagles' season opener Labor Day weekend despite less than cooperative winter weather.
The concession stands, restrooms, and storage areas that will be under the grandstands are stand-alone buildings that went up over the winter. Brennan says the framework for the seats is going up with Fuller Construction of Chadron pouring the concrete footings this past week.
The stadium project also includes replacing the showcase grass field with artificial turf. The initial plan called for removing much of the grass last fall, but Brennan says they decided to wait until spring to cut, roll-up, and transplant the grass.
About 60,000 of the 80,000 square feet of sod was removed with most of it going to the site of the demolished West Court Apartments on the extreme west side of the campus.
Brennan says the actual laying of the artificial turf won't occur for another couple months because of the time needed to install conduit for the scoreboard and lights as well as the rock and sand base for the turf..
The Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees gave final formal approval last month to adding lights for the football field to the project.
