BOX ELDER, S.D. (AP) -A Box Elder police officer shot and killed a 44-year-old man about 1:30 Wednesday morning at a mobile home park in Box Elder.

Names have not been released and state Attorney General Marty Jackley says his office will lead the investigation through the Division of Criminal Investigations. .

Box Elder Police Chief Jason Dubbs says 3 officers had a responded to a call at a residence in the mobile home park and that the situation escalated to the point that one officer shot and killed the man. The officer has been placed on administrative leave according to department policy.

Details have not been released on what specifically happened or the type of call that brought officers to the home. Chief Dubbs says it's first officer-involved shooting in Box Elder in at least 20 years and possibly the first ever.

The DCI usually finishes a shooting investigation within 30 days, then releases a summary. Jackley will determine at that point whether the use of deadly force was justified. The Pennington and the Meade County sheriff’s offices are assisting the DCI in its investigation.
