(Neb)-World Premiere Today For Work Commissioned For CSC Choirs   Listen

By: John Axtell Posted at: 04/15/2018 01:34 AM
CHADRON - The Chadron State College Concert Choir and Community Choir hold a joint free concert this afternoon at 3:00 in Memorial Hall that will be highlighted by the world premiere of a piece written specifically for the CSC vocal music program.

An anonymous gift to Chadron State to commission a new choral work for the school led to the selection of Nebraska composer David Von Kampen by CSC choir director Joel Schreuder, who knew Von Kampen professionally.

Von Kampen says they wanted to use Nebraska-themed poetry for the piece, but couldn't find any they liked for the project. That led to another Nebraska entering the project.

Von Kampen says Boesen told him she wrote all 3 poems in a day or two while his side of the work also went quickly.

The result was the piece "Three Nebraska Lyrics" which will be heard publicly for the first time this afternoon.

The first movement, On The Ridge, evokes the Pine Ridge - a region von Kampen hadn't visited until this weekend, when he drove in through a snowstorm on Friday and sat in on a rehearsal of the college groups yesterday.

It was the first time he'd heard the completed work performed and while he was thrilled by it, he did offer suggestions to Schreuder - at the director's urging - on a few sections to bring them closer to his intended concept. Von Kampen

A third choir is actually joining the Concert Choir and the Community Choir for today's premiere, the Ogallala High School choir. The concert begins at 3:00 in the Memorial Hall Auditorium and is free and open to the public.
