(Wyo)-Homemade Cannon Explodes, Kills Wyo Teen

By: John Axtell Posted at: 04/07/2018 02:34 PM
GILLETTE -  Authorities say a 14-year-old northeastern Wyoming boy was killed Thursday evening when the cannon he was building exploded.
Campbell County Sheriff Scott Matheny told the Gillette News Record that Archie Pearce was showing the cannon to a 12-year-old friend when it misfired in an abandoned lot in Recluse, an unincorporated community about 40 miles north of Gillette.

Sheriff Matheny says Pearce had used a steel pipe to make the cannon, partially filled it with cloth and gun powder or firework powder, tamped it down, and inserted a projectile.

Matheny says the teenager packed in too much powder and the projectile became stuck, causing barrel of the cannon to explode when the fuse was lit - essentially turning it into a pipe bomb.

Investigators say Pearce was using online videos to learn how to make the cannon. Bomb technicians called to the scene did not find any other dangerous devices.
