(Neb)-Winds Cause Two Major Scottsbluff-Gering Area Power Outages
SCOTTSBLUFF - High winds are blamed for two major power outages that hit the Scottsbluff-Gering area Monday afternoon, one involving the Roosevelt Public Power District and the other Nebraska Public Power District.
The Roosevelt PPD outage occurred about 3:30 and knocked out all of the Gering Valley including radio and television stations. Service was fully restored around 4:15
The NPPD outage hit about 1:40 and affected some 2,300 customers in the northern part of Scottsbluff and the rural area beyond. Spokesman Mark Becker says it was caused by a conductor line to a substation north of the city coming loose from an insulator or cross-arm.
Becker says nearly all customers were without electricity for about 45-minutes while crews shifted service to other substations, but some rural customers were without power into the evening.
Among those affected by the NPPD outage were Scottsbluff High School, Regional West Medical Center, and Western Nebraska Regional Airport - although the hospital and airport simply shifted to backup generators.
