(Neb)-Name Released In Fatal Crash During Police Chase
GERING - Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman says a Mitchell man was killed last night when his pickup hit a tree on the west side of Scottsbluff while fleeing police. 37-year old Joseph Beeler was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff Overman says the incident began in Mitchell with police receiving a call about 9:50 of a pickup going the wrong way on Highway 26. Beeler stopped at a Mitchell convenience store, then took off toward Scottsbluff when a Mitchell police officer arrived and began to get out of his cruiser.
Overman says as the pickup headed east on Highway 26, at times traveling in the wrong lane of traffic and at speeds in excess of 95 mph. Deputies attempted to deploy spike strips west of Scottsbluff, but Beeler avoided them.
He then turned southbound onto Avenue I in Scottsbluff and crossed the railroad tracks before he lost control and crashed into a large tree in front of a residence. Beeler was ejected and first responders declared him dead at the scene. The chase lasted only about 10-minutes.
Sheriff Overman says the investigation is continuing and that other agencies involved in the incident were the Mitchell and Scottsbluff police departments, Nebraska State Patrol, Scottsbluff Fire Department, and Valley Ambulance.
