(SD)- Wind Cave Lifts Backcountry Closure
WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK - Wind Cave National Park has reopened 13 miles of backcountry roads closed 3 weeks ago to protect natural and cultural resources against potential damage from an undisclosed group that park officials said may have been looking to set up a long-term camp.
Chief of Interpretation Tom Farrell says the temporary closure on parts of roads NPS 5 and NPS 6 and the surrounding backcountry area was lifted because other less-restrictive protective measures have been implemented.
Farrell also says [eriodic closures remain possible throughout winter for visitor safety during hazardous road conditions.
The Wind Cave National Park visitor center is in its winter hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 with cave tours at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. It will be closed on Christmas and New Year's Day.
