PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard has appointed a Black Hills school superintendent to serve as the new state secretary of education.
Meade County School Superintendent  Don Kirkegaard will take over January 1st from Melody Schopp, who is retiring December 15th.

Kirkegaard has been the Meade County superintendent since 2011 and a member of the South Dakota Board of Education Standards since 2006. The current president of the standards board, he will resign as both superintendent and a board member to join Daugaard's cabinet.
The governor says Kirkegaard's experience as a school administrator and service on the Standards Board  make him an able leader for the Education Department.
