GRAND ISLAND, Neb - Nebraska State Fair executive director Joe McDermott says he’s retiring at the end of the year after 30 years with the fair and 9 as director. He’ll serve as a consultant to the State Fair Board next year.
McDermott oversaw the move of the Fair from Lincoln to Grand Island in 2010 and has led it through 8 successful fairs in its new home.
He says “It has been an incredible run for the last three decades (but) it is now time to step aside so the Board can bring in a fresh set of eyes to gain a new perspective for the Fair. “
Fair Board Chairman Chris Kircher says the members appreciate McDermott’s 30 years and his willingness to serve as a consultant next year because it will help provide continuity during the search for his successor and help ensure an orderly and smooth transition to new leadership.
