(SD)-Former OST Corrections Officer Taking Plea Deal In Fatal Facebook MVA

By: John Axtell Posted at: 04/12/2017 11:18 AM
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -  Court documents show a former Oglala Sioux tribal corrections officer plans to plead guilty in a 2015 fatal distracted driving accident on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Sophia Janis of Porcupine will enter her plea in federal court in Rapid City later this month on the 28th.
As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, Janis admitted she was
looking at Facebook on her cellphone while driving a tribal corrections SUV on the reservation when she crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a minivan.

A passenger in the minivan, 58-year-old Theresa Martinez, was killed and the driver was injured so seriously her right leg had to be amputated. Another female passenger of the van was also injured.
