(Neb)-Chadron PD Asks For Help On String Of Thefts And Burglaries

By: John Axtell Posted at: 03/13/2017 10:59 PM
CHADRON - The Chadron Police Department is investigating a number of residential burglaries, stolen vehicles and thefts from motor vehicles over the past two weeks.  Lt Rick Hickstein says that, somewhat unusually for Chadron, some of the 4 homes that were broken into were locked as were some of the 3 vehicles stolen and 8 burglarized.

Items taken from the homes included jewelry, electronic devices, firearms, hunting equipment and currency while the thefts from vehicles also included currency as well as purses and stereo equipment. Lt Hickstein says 2 of the 3 vehicles there were stolen have been recovered with the investigation continuing into the third, a silver 2004 Cadillac SRX suv with Nebraska license 69-A993.

With the thief or thieves still at large, Hickstein says the Chadron Police Department is asking the public for help. Anyone with any knowledge or information about the crimes or noticing anything suspicious in their neighborhood is urged to call the department's regular line...308-432-0510. Emergency calls should go to 911.

Information can also be submitted to Crimestoppers and be eligible for a reward, even information given anonymously. The Dawes County Crimstoppers hotline is 308-432-0519 while the Nebraska Crimestoppers toll-free number is 1-800-422-1494. You can also contact the state group via the internet at www.nebraskacrimestoppers.com.

Even though several of the break-ins have involved locked vehicles and homes, Lt Hickstein says locking vehicles and homes and hiding items of value remains the best first step of protection. He also says area lighting around a home has proven to be a strong deterrent to criminals because if you're not an easy target, they'll likely move on to one that is.
