(Neb.)-Senator Tom Carlson Shares Insight On Amendments 2 & 3  Listen

(CHADRON)-Election Day is quickly approaching, and with it the opportunity to vote or not vote into office new or current candidates as well as new amendments. Nebraska state legislator Tom Carlson from Holdrege represents District 38, which encompasses seven counties. He called KCSR recently to talk about Amendment 3, which he initiated this year, and which appears on this year’s ballot. The amendment is asking voters to extend a Nebraska senator’s term limit from two terms (six years) to three terms (nine years).
Carlson says he’s realized after having served as a senator for six years now that it takes a while to learn the ropes and become an effective legislator. He does believe in term limits, but he also fears that some the state’s work horses may be getting put out to pasture prematurely in their prime.

Carlson says he does not feel the amendment is asking for anything unreasonable. The current term limit is actually less than any other state in the nation.

Carlson said that even if voters approve of the term increase amendment, the vote will still reside with the public on whether a senator would be granted a third term anyway. He says he does not think Nebraskans need to worry about senators making a career out of their time in the senate, and that ties into another amendment on ballots this Tuesday.

Amendment 2 will give voters the option of upping a senator’s annual pay from $12,000 to $22,500. On odd years, senators meet in session for 90 days from January 1st -June 1st, and on even years they meet for 60 days from January 1st-mid-April. Carlson said a senator’s job is far from being only relegated to the legislative sessions, however.
