(Neb.)-Chadron Municipal Pool Releases Summer Hours And Fees

By: Roxie Graham-Marski Posted at: 04/19/2012 01:30 PM

(CHADRON)-The city of Chadron has released their 2012 summer pool hours and admission prices. The pool will operate from Monday, May 28th to Wednesday, August 15th. The city has upped prices slightly from last year. City zoning/building official Janet Johnson explains the reason for the increase. “Every year the state does a voluntary survey on fees and how much we pay lifeguards and those types of things, plus I also conduct one myself,” says Johnson. “We were very low on our admission fees, so we increased each of the three categories of daily admissions by 50 cents, and we’re even dollars now. The other area where we increased because we were low was on swimming lesson fees.”
Johnson said pool prices will most likely be incrementally increased with time until more comparable with other towns. “Actually, we’re still a little low,” she says. “But…baby steps…a little at a time.”
Johnson said last year the city spent approximately $50,000 to operate the pool and only received about $15,000 revenue from patrons, so the pool is a service the city provides and is not a money maker.
Another change from last year, the pool will provide only one family night a week from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday nights, and no longer Tuesday nights. Johnson said there was simply not enough business last year to stay open both nights.
On another note, the park foundation is sponsoring a new slide for the pool. It will be engineered this summer and will be installed and ready for use by next summer. Johnson said one diving board will be taken out to make room for the slide. She hopes the slide will help alleviate the slight decline in numbers of individuals using the pool.
