Laura Lee Oetken was born on August 26, 1929 in Stuart, Nebraska and died August 15, 2013 at the Chadron Medical Center in Chadron, Nebraska. Laura Lee graduated from Crawford High School in 1947. Laura Lee (Desive) and Bert Oetken were united in marriage on March 17, 1948 in Crawford, Nebraska and lived on their ranch South East of Belmont where she raised her four boys and lived until a month before her death. Bert and Laura Lee just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in March.
Laura Lee loved her family and spending time with them more than anything else in her life. She was a member of the St. John’s Catholic Church in Crawford, Nebraska. She was a devote Catholic by attending Church weekly and reading daily devotionals and her bible daily. Laura Lee was an avid poet and enjoyed writing her poems in notebooks and individual books for each one of her grandchildren about people, animals, landscape, everyday life and the Lord. She also loved singing songs, reading books, playing games or reciting poems to her grandchildren, giving them knowledge, and always taking the time to teach them old and new ways.
Laura Lee also enjoyed doing crocheting, sewing, embroidery, watching her birds and was an excellent cook. There wasn’t one of her children or grandchildren that didn’t have some piece of work she had created or was given a special item of hers. Laura Lee also enjoyed taking photos and creating her photo albums, and cutting out articles in local newspapers and containing them in her scrapbooks. Laura Lee also loved listening to music and watching movies. Her greatest pride came in raising her four boys on the ranch south east of Belmont. She was also a longtime member of the Belmont neighbors Club. She was content just being a wonderful mother and a wife living on the ranch and her family appreciated her devotion to them.
