(Neb)-Walk-Off Win Wraps CSC Softball Opening Weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Chadron State softball team ended its opening weekend at the Lubbock Classic in Texas by beating Emporia State of Kansas 5-4 on a walk-off 2-out single by Aspen Eubanks, their only senior.
The Eagles went 2-3 at the tournament, winning their opener Friday 16-3 over Texas Permian Basin, then losing 4-0 to host Lubbock Christian, 6-4 to Midwestern State, and 4-1 in a rematch with Permian Basin.
Yesterday, CSC starter Jessica Jarecki got off to a rough start as Emporia State had 4 runners with an error, walk, hit batter, and single AND had 3 steals, but Jarecki ended the inning with a bases-loaded strikeout.
The Eagles answered with 4 runs in their half of the inning thanks to 5 straight hits that included a pair of singles that set up a 3-run homer by Eubanks and a solo homer by the next batter, Allie Mason.
Emporia State chipped away at the lead with single runs in the 5th and 6th, leaving the bases loaded in the 6th, then tying the game with a solo home run in the top of the 7th.
Chadron State took advantage of 2 big mistakes by the Hornets to plate the winning run in the bottom of the inning. After Kendyl Moody got on with a 1-out single, Allysa Geist's flyball to center was dropped.
Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and after Kayla Michel struck out, Eubanks banged home the game-winning single to left-center.
The Eagles had 10 hits as Mason, Michel, and Eubanks each had 2 while Eubanks had 4 RBIs and Mason 1. Jarecki went the distance for her first win against 2 losses, scattering 7 hits and 2 walks while striking 6 and yielding 2 earned runs.
The Eagles head to St George, Utah, this coming weekend for the Dixie State Easton Classic where they'll play Montana State-Billings and Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, Dominican and California Baptist on Friday, and Dixie State on Saturday.
