(Neb)-Cardinals Drop State Opener 2-1
HASTINGS - Chadron lost its opening game at the Class C state softball tournament this morning, falling to the Arlington Eagles 2-1 in a pitcher's duel.
All 3 runs were scored in the 6th inning. In the top of the inning, Chadron's Kylee Garrett led off with a single, went to 2nd on a wild pitch, then scored on a fielder's choice by beating the tag at home plate.
Arlington, though, answered in the bottom of the inning. Dana Dunbar walked the leadoff batter, then threw wildly on a sacrifice bunt to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Dunbar got the next two hitters to ground out, but each out scored a run and the Eagles had a 2-1 lead..
Arlington's Alexa Brent set the Cardinals down in order in the 7th to end the game and get the complete game victory. Brent struck out 12 on the day and kept Chadron from being able to take advantage of its 6-4 edge in hits.
Garrett led the Cardinals with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with a pair of singles.
Outside of the four hits, Dunbar struck out four Eagle batters.
Arlington this afternoon plays top seed Malcolm, who shut out Guardian Angel Central Catholic of West Point , while Chadron meets Guardian Angel in an elimination game tomorrow morning at 8:00 MT. We will again have all the action on KCSR and streamed here on chadrad.com.
