(Neb)-UPDATE - Cardinals Fall In Semis, Tournament Suspended By Rain
Because of rain and wet grounds, the game between Chadron and Centura-Central Valley has been suspended until Sat 9 am.
CHADRON - Chadron fell into the elimination bracket of the Class C District 6 softball tournament Friday morning with a 10-8 loss to Southern Valley-Alma. The Cardinals will now play Centura-Central Valley, who eliminated Ord in another morning game.
The teams actually started the game with the first two CCV batters reaching base before play was stopped because of the weather. The winner will meet SVA later this afternoon in the district title game. Should SVA lose, a winner-take-all game would follow immediately
Chadron was its own worst enemy against Southern Valley with 5 errors and some mental miscues, but they were also unlucky with several potentially game-winning drives in the bottom of the 7th just foul.
The Cardinals struck first with a pair of runs in the opening inning, but SVA plated 4 in the top of the 2nd to go up 4-2. Chadron got a run back in the 3rd and tied in with another in the 4th, but the Eagles responded with 2 of their own in the 5th to go back on top 6-4.
The Cardinals closed to 6-5 in the bottom of the 5th, SVA pushed across 2 more in the 6th to make it 8-5, but Chadron rallied for 3 runs to tie it going into the final inning.
Errors opened the way for SVA to score twice in the top of the 7th, setting the stage for an exciting but ultimately heartbreaking loss for Chadron. The Cardinals loaded the bases with 2 outs, but after a couple load fouls saw the game end on a strikeout.
