(Neb)-Chadron's Hickstein Wins Girls Amateur Stroke Play State Crown
BEEMER, Neb. - Chadron's Alpine Hickstein shot her 2nd straight 3-over 74 yesterday to win the 17th Nebraska Girls' Amateur Stroke Play Championship at the Indian Trails Country Club in Beemer.
Her 6-over 148 was 3 strokes better than last year's Girls Match Play and high school Class A state champion Megan Whittaker of Elkhorn South, her second round playing partner.
Hickstein, who will be a senior at Chadron High and placed 2nd in the Class C state tournament the past 2 years, came into yesterday's 2nd round leading by 2 strokes, but promptly bogeyed 3 of her first 4 holes to fall into a tie.
Whittaker bogeyed the 5th but birdied the 6th and 7th to take a 1 stroke lead, but then bogeyed the next 3 holes while Hickstein played even-par. In fact, she parred straight holes before getting a birdie on 14th to push her lead to 3.
Whittaker cut it to 2 with a birdie of her own on 15, but gave the stroke back with a bogey on 16 while Hickstein parred both holes to again lead by 3. Another birdie on 17 by Whittaker left Hickstein with a 2-shot lead going into the final hole. She bogeyed the 18th but Whittaker had a double-bogey and Hickstein took the crown.
Her steadiness was the difference. Whittaker had 5 birdies in the 36-hole tournament to Hickstein's 3, but she also had 12 bogeys and a double-bogey while Hickstein had just 9 bogeys to go along with 24 pars over the 2 days.
