(Neb)-Eagles Split DH at Colo Mines
GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Chadron State College softball team split a doubleheader yesterday at Colorado School of Mines in a battle of the teams sitting in 3rd and 4th place in the RMAC. The Eagles won the opener 2-1 and lost the second 11-3 in 5 innings.
CSC is now 10-0 in 1-run games this year while 11 of their losses have been by 5 or more runs, including 9 losses ended early by the mercy rule.
Game one went scoreless through 3 innings before each team scored in the 4th The Eagles did it with starting with a hit by Aspen Eubanks followed by a steal from pinch-runner Kendyl Moody, a groundout, and a Mines error.
The Orediggers then pounded out 3 hits to tied it at 1-1.
CSC scored the wiining run In the 6th on 4 straight walks and Jessica Jarecki made it stand up. She retired Mines in order in the 6th, then after giving up a lead-off single in the 7th retiring the next 3 batters, ending the game with a strikeout to improve to 11-6 on the year.
Game 2 would have been close except for the 3rd inning, when Mines had 9 hits and scored 9 runs...5 of them with 2 outs and only 1 of them earned. The Eagles, who scored once in the 1st thanks to a pair of Oredigger errors, got a 2-run homer of the 5th but couldn't get the margin below the 8 that triggered the mercy rule.
The split leaves Mines a game-and-a-half in front of the Eagles in the RMAC 20-10 to 18-11 keeping them in 3rd in the standings. The series wraps up with another doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is 11:00
