(Neb)-Bayard Considering Going To 8-Man Football
BAYARD - Bayard could be the next Panhandle high school to drop from 11-man to 8-man football. The school board is meeting tonight in preliminary discussions with coaches and administrators on dropping down starting with the 2018 season. Bayard is currently C-2 and would drop to D-1 if it makes the change.
Superintendent Travis Miller says the biggest challenge facing Bayard football is numbers. There were just over 20 players in all 4 grades out last year, making full scrimmages virtually impossible, while NSAA rules limiting full contact to every other day makes it hard to have a JV squad since those playing both varsity and JV could take part in full contact practices the day after a JV game.
MIller says there are several reasons for the dwindling number of football players including an overall drop in Bayard's enrollment, more students choosing cross-country over football, and more taking part in non-sports extra curricular activities.
