(Chadron)- After 23 season as a head coach, Chadron High volleyball coach Don Matt has announced his retirement.
Between his time at West Point Central Catholic and Chadron, Coach Matt's teams made 13 state tournament appearances with 4 state titles and a third place finish as recently as 2015.
At Chadron High, Matt had accumulated 240 wins and brought the school their first conference title in 20 years, telling the Chadron Record, "All of it was fun."
When Matt took over the Cardinal program in 2006, he was taking over a team that had put together two losing seasons over the previous three years. He experienced two himself in the next two years that followed, but in 2008 Chadron got over the bump with a 13-12 record. Since then, his teams hadn't lost any more than seven games in a season.
The highlight season with the Lady Cardinal volleyball squad was the 2015 season in which they made it to the Class C-1 state semi-finals, only to lose to Ord before defeating Columbus Scotus for third place.
Matt says that now he will use his time in the fall to watch his sons play football being that he is a "football guy at heart."
Chadron High AD Andy Pope says the school has two applications for the volleyball head coaching position and will conduct interviews soon.
