(Neb.)- Chadron Squads Split Double Header With Gothenburg

By: Jeremy Anderson & John Axtell Posted at: 01/06/2017 11:17 PM
(Chadron)- The Chadron High boys and girls split a doubleheader with Gothernburg last night on a neutral court in Sidney. The Lady Cardinals never trailed in a 37-30 victory while the boys saw a 1-point halftime lead turn into a 62-42 loss to the 4th-ranked Swedes.

In the girls' game, Chadron's biggest lead was 8 until the 4th quarter when they pushed the margin to 12 at 35-23, only to see Gothenburg go on a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to 35-30 and have a chance to get it to one possession before missing a free throw with about 5-seconds left.

The Lady Cards were led once again by All-Stater Jadyn McCartney, who scored 13 in the 1st half and finished with 21...the 8th time in 10 outings this year that she's topped 20....but Chadron's next-highest total was 6 by Teagan Westemeier. Chadron didn't hit a 3-pointer for the first game all year.

The boys' game came down to free throws - Gothenburg was 18-23 from the foul line while Chadron was 2-8 - and runs by the Swedes.

Gothenburg scored the first 9 points of the game and led 20-7 early in the 2nd quarter, but the Cardinals took a 24-23 lead into half when Brendinh Sayaloune hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The teams traded the lead early in the 3rd quarter, then Gothenburg outscored the Cardinals 34-14 the rest of the way...including 18-6 in the final period.

Gothenburg put the clamps on Chadron's 2 leading scorers on the season. Coy Bila was in foul trouble most of the night and fouled out with no points while Keegan Shuck scored just 1 on a free throw with about 4:00 left in the game.

Both Chadron teams are back in action Saturday afternoon hosting Mitchell with the girls' game starting at 3:30 and pregame here on KCSR at 3:20.

The Lady Cards and Lady Tigers are 2 of the best teams in the Panhandle. Chadron has now won 7 of 8 after opening the season 0-2 while Mitchell is 9-1, their only loss coming to Sterling, Colo, in the Western Conference Tournament finals.

The teams met 3 times last year with Mitchell winning the rubber match in the subdistrict finals 45-38. The Lady Tigers return that entire team and were ranked 7th in Class C-1 before Christmas by the Omaha World-Herald.

The two boys teams are struggling. Chadron's loss dropped the Cardinals to 4-6 while Mitchell beat Bayard on Tuesday to improve to 3-6. Chadron and Mitchell met the opening weekend of the season in the Western Conference Tournament with the Cardinals taking a 66-52 victory.
