(Neb)-Eagles Place 8 At Fremont Tournament
CHADRON - The Chadron State wrestling team rang out 2016 with a strong performance on New Year's Eve at the Viking-Warrior Open Tournament at Midland University in Fremont, placing 8 men in the top 4 of their weight classe. The field included wrestlers from over 30 schools plus unattached competitors.
The Eagles had no champions, but did have a pair of runners-up. Senior Taylor Summers at 133 and sophomore Willy Cogdill at 184 pounds both won twice before losing in the championship round. CSC got 3rds from Brock Thumm, who went 4-1 at 141, and Chance Helmick at 174, who finished 3-1.
Bringing home 4th places were Brandon Kile at 125, Sean Glasgow 149, Johnny Porter 157, and Cooper Cogdill at heavyweight. Each finished with 2-2 records except Cogdill, who won 4 straight between losing his first and last matches.
Reed Burgener had a 3-2 record at 165 pounds, but did not place.
Chadron State coach Brett Hunter said before the tournament that he was happy to get the action in part because the Eagles had last been in action on Dec 3rd and have another 2 weeks off before hosting Colorado Mesa in a dual on Saturday the 14th.
