(Neb.)-CSC Rebounds Against Western New Mexico
CHADRON - David Downey scored 20 points and Zac Bargen added 16 more and a game-high eight rebounds to lift Chadron State College to an 88-82 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Western New Mexico Saturday.
The Eagles, who had a deflating loss to New Mexico Highlands on Friday, rebounded nicely Saturday in securing their seventh win of the season. Chadron State shot just 40 percent from the field (24 of 60) but hit 32 of 41 foul shots and added eight treys.
CSC was also active on the offensive glass, finishing with 18 rebounds that resulted in 14 second chance points. The Eagles also had 14 more boards than the Mustangs (41-27) and generated 12 steals.
In addition to Downey's game-high 20 and Bargen's all-around night, Chadron State received plenty of bright spots. Kendrick Holliman scored 15 points, Kyle Vinich finished with 10, Grant Stone ended with nine points and Chris Taylor scored seven points and provided four steals.
The Eagles and Mustangs traded the lead early in the first half but CSC never trailed by less than three points and owned as much as a 14-point lead early in the second half.
Five Western New Mexico (1-14, 1-11 RMAC) players finished in double figures but the Mustangs only received 10 points from the rest of the bench. Point guard Terrez Scott led Western with 19 points and six assists.
For the game, Western New Mexico connected on 29 of 54 shots (53.7 percent) and made 18 of 25 from the line.
