(Neb.)-Last minute comeback pushes Cardiac Cardinals past Alliance

By: Andrew Lacy Posted at: 01/17/2014 10:10 PM
Down by 10 points with under 1:30 remaining, the Chadron boys basketball team scored 11 unanswered to get an improbable 66-65 comeback victory over Alliance Friday night. The Chadron girls won their contest 53-22.

The Cardinal boys got off to a slow start and trailed by eight after the first quarter, but fought back to tie the score at halftime. The teams traded the lead through a very physical second half before Alliance got up by double digits.

Chadron mounted a furious rally in the final 90 seconds with a three pointer by Vonsinh Sayaloune and two by Jake Danielson to cut the deficit to one. Jackson Dickerson stole an inbounds pass and scored to put the home team in front.

Alliance had more opportunity with seven seconds remaining, but Trevor Kamerzell missed a long three pointer and Josh Matulka's second chance attempt clanged off the rim before Spencer Eliason secured the rebound and the win.

Eliason led the Cardinals with 25 points and 12 rebounds, Sayaloune scored 13 and TD Stein had 11. Kamerzell led Alliance with 23 including six triples.

The girls game was much more lopsided, with Chadron running out to a 40-7 halftime lead. They held Alliance to just two baskets from the field with the first not coming until 5:50 in the second period.

The Lady Cardinals then scored seven straight to open the third quarter for a 40 point lead to start the running clock mercy rule, but fell out of synch. Alliance outscored Chadron 15-6 after the running clock began, but the margin was too much to overcome.

Chadron had three players in double figures, with 11 each by Peyton Hinn and Bailea Kerr and 10 by Chandler Hageman.

The next game for both teams will be Friday on the road at Gering.
