(Neb.)-Cardinals split in Mitchell
The Chadron basketball teams split their games in Mitchell Saturday with the girls winning 68-53 and the boys falling 57-52.
The Lady Cardinals started slow and led by just four after the first quarter, but pulled away in the second half, leading by as much as 21 in the third quarter.
Four Chadron players scored in double figures, led by 20 from Ashlea Kerr. Bailea Kerr added 14 and 10 rebounds, Peyton Hinn scored 14 and Chandler Hageman had 10.
The boys team struggled in a very physical game. Mitchell took a four point lead to the half and never gave it up. The Cardinals struggled shooting the ball, and weren't able to take advantage of open shots late. They were able to cut the lead to just one with less than a minute remaining, but Mitchell made its free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Spencer Eliason led Chadron with 23 points and 13 rebounds and Vonsinh Sayaloune scored 17.
The girls will return home Tuesday night to face St. Thomas More. The next boys game will be at home Friday against Alliance.
