(Neb.)-Cardinals win Western Conference
The Chadron volleyball team went 3-0 at home Saturday to win the Western Conference volleyball tournament.
The Lady Cardinals opened the day with a three set win in pool play, beating Gering 25-23, 14-25, 25-19. Ashlea Kerr led Chadron in the with nine kills and Peyton Hinn added eight.
In game two, Chadron swept Scottsbluff 25-23, 25-20. Kerr had eight kills in the match, while Hinn and Chandler Hageman each had six.
The Championship game put Chadron against Mitchell. Last time the two teams met, Mitchell handed the Lady Cardinals their only loss of the season. In Saturday's game, Mitchell took the first set, 25-17, but Chadron bounced back to win the next two and the championship 25-13, 25-16. Maaryn Davis stepped up in the final match with 15 kills, Hageman added 11 and Kerr had 10. Jayden Garrett finished the match with 48 set assists.
Coach Don Matt said it was a good tournament for his team. He said they did a good job overcoming some slow starts and other obstacles to finish strong.
The tournament win gives Chadron its first conference championship since 1996. They'll hit the road Tuesday for a match at Sidney.
