(Neb.)-Cardinals perform well at district track
Chadron seniors Nicky Applegarth and Briley Hannaford were among the big winners during Thursday's district track meet in Scottsbluff.
Applegarth dominated her competition in the 3200 meters, taking first place with a time of 11:50.27, more than seven seconds better than second place finisher Dani Wellnitz of Gordon-Rushville.
Hannaford was second in the 1600 meters, finishing less than a second behind Gering's Rachel Huffman with a time of 5:33.58.
Freshman Jayden Garrett also qualified for state by finishing third in the 400 meters with a time of 1.00.69.
Applegarth, Hannaford and Garrett picked up more hardware alongside Hannah Anderson as Chadron won the 4x800 relay by more than ten seconds.
Jackson Dickerson had the best day of Chadron's boys, finishing fifth in the 100 meters (11.61 seconds) and sixth in the 200 (24.23).
Other top ten finishes for Chadron girls were Applegarth finishing eighth in the 800 (2:53.03), Ashlyn Eitemiller was seventh in the 300 meter hurdles (50.4) and the Applegarth, Hannaford, Anderson and Garrett relay team was fifth in the 4x400.
In the field, Carly Churchill took sixth for Chadron in the shot put (36'10") with Danea Ray placing tenth (33'9 1/2").
Top ten finishes for the Chadron boys were Phillip Duncan taking ninth in the 3200 meters (10:59.53) with Thomas McClure in tenth (11:16.21). Robert Kouba was ninth in the 300m hurdles (44.05) and Dickerson was eighth in the long jump (19'1").
