Jordon Debus

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Perry McAfee and Jordan Debus officially became the Chadron State College wrestling program’s 44th and 45th All-Americans Saturday during the consolation rounds of the NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships.

Debus, a junior from Mitchell, captured fifth place at 184 pounds and McAfee, a senior from Casper, Wyo., was eighth at 133.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way Jordan and Perry competed each match,” interim head coach Brett Hunter said. “These guys deserve the hardware they’re receiving and I’m so pleased I got to share in their success.”

Debus looked sharp once again in his opening match Saturday morning when he earned a 4-2 decision over Gannon’s Zack Zelcs. Debus never trailed in the match and scored once on a takedown and later on an escape.

Debus got tripped up, though, in the consolation semifinals when Travis McKillop of Pittsburgh-Johnstown cruised to a 15-0 technical fall. McKillop entered the match with just two losses this season.

The 184-pounder from Mitchell bounced back in a big way in the fifth place match by earning an 8-1 decision over Upper Iowa’s Mitch Schultz. Debus, who ends the season with a 24-13 record, never trailed in the match.

In the consolation quarterfinals, McAfee lost an 8-3 decision to Ashland’s Michael Labry, who entered the tournament as the fifth-ranked wrestler at 133. Labry had three takedowns in the match, including two in the final period.

McAfee also had a hard time getting his offense going against lanky Justin Reinsma of Southwest Minnesota State in their match for seventh place. Reinsma scored early in the first period and added two more takedowns en route to his 6-4 decision.

McAfee finishes the season with a 19-13 record and ends his career at Chadron State with a 27-19 record.
