(Neb.)-Kapukotuwa sets school record in weight throw
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Chadron State College’s Charith Kapukotuwa set the school record in the 35-pound weight throw during the opening day of the NCAA Division II National Championships at the CrossPlex Complex in Birmingham, Ala., Thursday.
With his throw of 60-feet, 3-inches, Kapukotuwa finished the competition in ninth place, just missing out on All-American honors.
Kapukotuwa hit 59-5 on his first throw and then exploded for 60-3 on his second toss to break Doug Lytle’s 15-year-old record of 60-1 ½. He fouled his next two throws and then hit 59-7 ¾ and 58-10.
Richard Quick of Ashland won the event with a mark of 68-3 ¼. Including his national championship throw, Quick was responsible for the top four throws in the event and two of his teammates joined him in the top five.
Chadron State’s Alex Graham and Alyssa Norton will compete in the 60-meter sprint and the shot put, respectively, Friday afternoon.
