The Chadron boys basketball team came up one point short Friday night, losing at Gering, 56-55.

The Cardinals got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 10-2 lead at the start of the game and were up 16-8 after one quarter. But Gering battled back and outscored Chadron 28-9 in the second to take a 36-25 lead to the locker room.

Chadron chipped away in the third quarter and a buzzer beater from a step inside of half court by Jackson Dickerson cut the deficit to 45-43. Vonsinh Sayaloune hit three big three pointers in the second half to help spark the comeback and Spencer Eliason was solid all night, finishing with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

Chadron would lead by as much as five in the fourth quarter before Gering tied it back up. A pair of free throws by Sayaloune put Chadron ahead 55-54 with 18.6 seconds remaining. Gering's Joses Palomo hit a tough shot from the free throw line to take the lead with 5.6 seconds on the clock and Matt Lordino's three at the buzzer was off the mark to give Gering the win.

Chadron is now 0-7 on the season against larger schools, but 4-1 against Class C1.

In the girls game, Chadron got off to a slow start before pulling away for a 49-29 win.

The Lady Cardinals had one of their lowest scoring quarters of the season to start the game and were tied 4-4 after one. They got back on track to take a 25-13 lead at halftime before cruising to another blowout.

Peyton Hinn led Chadron with 15 points for the second straight night. Ashlea Kerr bounced back from a five point performance Thursday night to put up 13 against Gering on Friday. The Kerr sisters were among several Chadron girls who have been playing through illness the past two days.

Both teams will face a stretch of three games in five days next week, starting at Gordon-Rushville Tuesday night.
