(Neb,)-Eagles' Wrestling Team Taking Time To Read To Local School Children

By: Dennis and Kathi Brown Posted at: 09/30/2012 07:36 AM

CHADRON – Fans of Chadron State College have become accustomed to several of the wrestling program's traditions. The full body paint before home football games, the piggyback run up C-Hill and the annual Cardinal-White scrimmage, to name a few.

Now, add reading to elementary students to that list.

Spearheaded by interim head coach Brett Hunter, the Chadron State wrestling team will be reading to local elementary students each Friday when their schedule permits it.

The first reading time was Friday afternoon at the Chadron Primary School.

“I just want the team to give back to the community,” Hunter said. “When I was in grade school, there wasn't anything like this and I think it's a great opportunity to do something positive. These kids really look up to college students and it is good for the team to see what sort of effect they have on people they don't normally come into contact with.”

Following Friday's reading session to two classrooms full of kindergarteners, the wrestlers echoed Hunter's sentiments and were excited to continue reading to children.

The kindergarteners shared the wrestling team's enthusiasm.

“They have been looking forward to this all day,” said Melissa Schmid, a kindergarten teacher at Chadron Primary. “It's fun to have visitors come to the classroom, especially when they're sports stars.”
