(Neb.) - Nationals struggle to 0-4 on road trip
The First National Bank North Platte Senior Nationals are on their 'Road to Omaha' trip, with baseball stops along the way. The team has found runs hard to come by on a trip that has seen the team outscored 45-10.
The trip began on Monday with a trip to Sidney. The Nationals got the scoring started in the third inning when they were able to plate a run. In the fourth they took the lead again, 2-1. After tying it up in the bottom half of the inning and holding Chadron scoreless in the fifth, Sidney erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. The Nationals got a run back in the final inning, but couldn't overcome the deficit and lost 7-3.
The team then traveled to Chappell for an evening contest against Buckley. Wyatt Blome pitched six strong innings in a 2-1 losing effort, but did not surrender an earned run. The Nationals defense committed five errors in the loss, while Blome struck out eight Buckley hitters.
After an 0-2 start to the road trip the Nationals made their way to Kearney, where things did not get any easier. In game one of two against Kearney the Nationals fell into a 13-0 hole after two innings. The Nationals scored six runs in the top of the third inning and held Kearney scoreless in the bottom half. After not giving up a run in the fourth inning, Kearney scored six in the home half of the inning and won 19-6 in a shortened game due to the 10-run rule.
In game two Kearney continued to find ways to score, plating 17 runs on eight hits over two innings. The Nationals got just one hit in three innings and the game ended after 2 1/2 innings of play due to the 15-run rule with the final score 17-0.
The Nationals have scattered 18 hits in the four games of the road trip, but have also committed 13 errors.
The Nationals travel to Northeast Nebraska to conclude the lengthy road trip with two games on Thursday. They have a game scheduled to start at 3:00 in Wakefield, before playing in Wayne at 7:00 in the nightcap.
The Nationals have dropped to 8-10 on the season.
The Nationals return home on Friday to host Buckley in a rematch from earlier this week.
