(SD)-Rollover Crash Near Edgemont Claims 1 Teen, 4 Left Injured
EDGEMONT, S.D. (AP) - One teenager was killed and four others injured early Sunday morning when a sport utility vehicle went off Highway 18 about 10 miles east of Edgemont. Names have not been released.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol says the 18-year old male driver was westbound about 3:00 a-m when the 18-year old SUV went off the pavement and rolled just north of Old Highway 18.
The driver died at the scene while his 4 passengers - two 15-year old girls, a 15-year old boy, and a 16 year old boy - suffered minor injuries. Two were taken to the Southern Hills hospital in Hot Springs while the other 2 were released to their parents. None of the 5 teens were wearing a seat belt.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash while the Edgemont and Hot Springs school districts have made arrangements for counselors to help students and staff deal with the tragedy when school begins Monday.
