(Neb)-Chadron Gets Off Easy With Storm Listen
CHADRON - While yesterday's storm didn't hit Chadron as hard as expected, it did cause a large number of postponements and early closures. The Chadron and Alliance airports closed by mid-afternoon, forcing the cancellation of the day's remaining Boutique Airlines flights.
Chadron Public Works Director Milo Rust says since the last inbound flight from Denver was cancelled, there is no plane in Chadron this morning...forcing the airline to cancel the 7 am flight to Denver. Rust says sometimes Alliance or Chadron will still have flights when the airport in the other city is force to close, but not this time.
Alliance was the first to close yesterday as it had fog as well as wind and snow.
The city of Chadron declared a snow emergency for this morning at 2:30 and no officially announcement of its cancellation was received by that time.
Some customers of Northwest Rural Public Power District who lost electric service because the storm found themselves without power longer than normal because the utility recalled its repair crews early in the afternoon because weather conditions posed safety issues for them.
The crews resumed checking for breaks and restoring service when the wind and snow abated.
While Chadron escaped with relatively little snow, that wasn't the case elsewhere in the Panhandle with spotted highway closures from Gordon to the state lines with Wyoming and Colorado.
The Nebraska State Patrol confirmed yesterday afternoon there had been a fatal traffic accident near Chappell involving multiple semis; but no other information is available at this time.
