(SD)-Porcupine Woman Pleads Guilty In Beating Death Of Toddler Son
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A Pine Ridge Reservation woman accused of beating her 2-year-old son to death after he wet his bed has pleaded guilty to 2nd-degree murder.
30-year-old Katrina Shangreaux of Porcupine had been charged with 1st-degree murder in the death of 2-year-old Kylen Shangreaux in July 2016, but a plea deal with prosecutors reduced the charges. She will remain jailed until sentencing, which hasn't been scheduled, when she could get life in prison.
Prosecutors say Shangreaux hit and kicked him in the head until he suffered intracranial bleeding and died. In a confession written as part of the plea agreement, she said she was drunk and on pain medication when she came home and became enraged that Kylen wet his bed and called her 'Angie.'
Angie is her sister who had custody of Kylen for about a year and had been returned only about a month before by the Oglala Sioux Tribal Court.
49-year old Sonya Dubray, Shangreaux's mother and Kylen's grandmother, has pleaded Not Guilty to evidence tampering and being an accessory to murder.
The boy's father, James Shangreux, is serving time in federal prison for abuse and neglect in the death of another young son but with a different woman.
