(SD)-Sentencing In Reservation Child Abuse Case
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The aunt and mother of two toddlers found emaciated on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in 2016 have been sentenced, one to prison and one to probation.
Mother Darcel Featherman was sentenced to 3 years of probation for abandoning her daughters to people whom she knew were unfit to take care of them.
Aunt Darshan Featherman received 10 years in prison for felony child abuse and neglect. She earlier admitted withholding food from a 2-year-old niece in her care.
A pediatrician who examined the girl and her 3-year-old sister said each weighed only about 13 pounds and would have died if they hadn't been found. The girls are now living with a foster family.
