(SD)-State Veterans Cemetery Bill Sent To Governor
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota State Senate on Wednesday approved and sent to Gov Dennis Daugaard a plan to build a state veterans cemetery in Sioux Falls. Actual construction is contingent on the National Cemetery Administration approving the project and sharing in the cost.
The bill also lets the state accept a land donation from the city of Sioux Falls for the project and allows the creation of an endowment fund to pay for the rest of the construction and operation costs of the cemetery.
Ken Teunissen, commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, calls it a "day that'll go down in history."
Tony Venhuizen, the governor's chief of staff, says Daugaard would support the proposal as long as state budget writers come through with funding.
