(Neb)-Gale Clears Krist To Run As Democrat
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale says he will allow State Senator Bob Krist of Omaha to run for governor as a Democrat, rejecting challenges from both another Democratic hopeful and the state Republican party.
Krist switched his registration from Republican to nonpartisan in September, took steps to create a new party - the United Nebraska party, then registered this month as a Democrat.
The Republicans and Democrat Tyler Davis argued that Krist's moves failed to meet a state requirement that candidates change party affiliation before the first Friday in December preceding an election year.
Gale, a Republican, rejected the challenge, ruling that changing from nonpartisan to Democrat is considered a declaration of party, not switching parties.
The primary election is May 15 and Thursday is the filing deadline.
