(SD)-State Of Judiciary: Meth And Opiods "A New Wave Of Evil"
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Supreme Court Chief Justice David Gilbertson told state lawmakers Wednesday that an explosion of meth and prescription drugs is a "new wave of evil" that has descended upon state residents.
Gilbertson said in his State of the Judiciary message that addiction to meth and prescription drugs continues despite efforts by law enforcement and the court system, but that the statewide network of drug and alcohol courts is working.
Gilbert said the specialized courts that provide away for those who committed crimes because of substance abuse to work on their issues and avoid prison served 462 participants in fiscal 2017, up from 314 the year before.
He also said an inpatient component should be added to the drug court program.
Gilbertson was appointed to the high court in 1995 and has served as chief justice since 2001. He was re-elected in 2016 to a fifth term as chief justice by the other justices.
