(Neb)-Happy Veterans Day
This is Veterans Day, a national and state holiday, but since it falls on a Saturday, yesterday was the legal holiday for most people.
Among the exceptions are the U-S Postal Service and most banks, which had business as usual yesterday and are closed today. It's free admission to National Park Service locations today as well.
Veteran's Day began as Armistice Day, marking the end of the fighting in World War 1 at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. While Presidential proclamations were issued for it starting in 1919, Armistice Day didn't become a national holiday until 1938.
After World War II, a movement began to broaden the meaning of the day, culminating in Congress changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all those who served in the U-S military.
The largest Veteran's Day event in the Panhandle is the Scottsbluff Veterans Day Parade, which began at 11:00 and was kicked off by a flyover from a pair of F-16 from the Colorado National Guard
