(Neb)-Nebraska Dry Bean Crop Expected Next Year
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska is best known for huge quantities of corn and beef, but the state is also becoming a top producer of several bean varieties and could see its biggest crop of dry edible beans in over a quarter century next year.
A new report this month from the USDA says low corn prices will lead farmers to switch some cornfields to beans while projections of good growing conditions mean more farmers will see yields go up as well.
The report says the trend of farmers planting more beans in areas where they grow well was evident this year as bean acreage in those areas jump 40%.
Also pushing expectations for the future is the U.S. Dry Bean Council, which says growing interest in ethnic foods and plant-based foods may boost dry bean consumption as well.
