(Neb)-Alliance Teen Takes Top Honor At Peabody Hale Fiddle Contest

By: John Axtell Posted at: 08/01/2017 03:06 PM
A young musician from Alliance claimed the top prize at the 55th annual Peabody Hale Fiddle Contest last Saturday in Crawford. 14-year old Grant Robbins won the Junior Fiddle Division, ages 13-to-18, then won the fiddle-off with the winners of the other divisions.

This year's contest attracted 30 musicians from Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota ranging in age from 8-year old Tatianna Obando of Whitney to Paul Bader of Valentine, who emphasized that he was 90-1/2. It also drew a crowd of more than 250, including one visitor from York, England.

Taking top honors in the Pee Wee Fiddle Division, for those up to age 12, was Tristin Jacob of Casper, while Abby Maginnis of Crawford was the Adult 19-59 winner and Vern Billingsly of Douglas was the Senior champion.

Mandolin player Deborah Horst of Crawford won the crown in the Miscellaneous Instrument Division, Dwain Soester of Chadron took the Adult Vocal Contest, and Rachel Nichols of Cheyenne was the Junior Vocal champion.

The day also had a horseshoe tournament and a quilt show that drew over 30 entries.  The Quilt Show People's Choice Award was Cheri Beaver's butterfly quilt which was pieced and quilted by Becky Chubb and Phyllis Hamaker.

Organizers say they had wonderful donations from local businesses in addition to sponsors for trophies.

Fiddle trophies were donated by the family of the festival founders, the late Dora and Ellis "Peabody" Hale. Vocal and miscellaneous trophies donated by Betty Moffatt, while the overall trophy was in memory of long time fiddle player and event supporter - Ray Hamaker.

The organizers also send out many thanks to all who helped put on the show, participated in the show, or just continue to support a great day of family entertainment...adding in the words of founder and namesake Peabody Hale - Keep a Smile on Your Face and May the Good Lord Take A Likin to You
